Kensington Cinema Snug

High-Performance Cinema Snug in Kensington, London

Located within the lower ground floor of a converted historic courthouse in Kensington, this compact cinema snug was designed for a client working professionally within the film industry. As an experienced film editor, the client required exceptional audio and video fidelity within a space intended for both critical viewing and everyday enjoyment.

Rather than creating a traditional large-format projection room, the brief focused on delivering the highest possible performance within a smaller, more intimate environment — combining cinematic accuracy with the comfort of a private lounge.

The result is a refined, highly immersive media room where careful attention to image quality, speaker performance and room atmosphere creates an experience that feels far larger than the room’s physical footprint.

Designed for Accuracy

Because the client worked professionally with film and video content, accurate image reproduction was essential.

A reference-quality large-format display was therefore selected and professionally calibrated to industry standards, ensuring faithful colour reproduction, balanced contrast and natural shadow detail.

The room’s complete absence of windows provided full ambient light control, allowing the display to perform optimally at all times of day without compromise from external light intrusion.

This controlled environment contributes significantly to the cinematic quality of the space despite its relatively compact dimensions.

Full-Range Sound in a Compact Room

Audio performance was approached with equal attention to detail.

Rather than relying on smaller architectural loudspeakers, the room uses full-range floorstanding speakers across both the front and surround channels, delivering exceptional dynamic range and tonal consistency around the seating position.

The centre channel is integrated discreetly within the media cabinetry behind acoustically transparent fabric, preserving a clean visual presentation while maintaining dialogue clarity and screen anchoring.

Together, the system creates an enveloping and highly detailed sound field that remains composed even during demanding film material.

A Controlled, Cinematic Environment

The room is finished in deep anthracite tones across walls and ceiling, creating a cocooned atmosphere ideal for film viewing.

The client’s personal collection of favourite films is displayed within the room, introducing moments of colour and personality that provide a visual counterpoint to the otherwise minimalist interior. Beyond their aesthetic contribution, the framed artwork helps to subtly break up flat wall surfaces, contributing to a more acoustically diffuse and balanced listening environment. Oatmeal-coloured carpet contributes warmth, comfort and subtle acoustic absorption.

A modular media cabinet provides understated integration of the system while maintaining the room’s lounge-like character.

The overall effect is intimate, sophisticated and intentionally restrained — a cinema space designed around performance rather than spectacle.

Designed for Both Work and Enjoyment

The completed cinema snug provides an environment that balances professional-level performance with the comfort of a private retreat.

For the client, the room serves not only as a space to enjoy film and television, but also as a controlled environment for reviewing his own editorial work — where image accuracy, tonal balance and sound quality are critically important.

At the same time, the intimate scale and relaxed atmosphere of the room make it equally suited to unwinding in the evening or entertaining guests. The project demonstrates how a compact, carefully designed media room can deliver a genuinely cinematic experience without requiring a large dedicated theatre space.
