Cinema Room Upgrade & Modernisation – Finchley, North London
Home Cinema Upgrade in Finchley, North London
This dedicated cinema room in Finchley, North London was originally installed by our team in 2016 as part of a period property renovation. A decade later, the client invited us back to modernise the system to current performance standards while preserving the character and atmosphere of the space.
The brief was straightforward: retain the room’s established aesthetic and layout, but upgrade image performance, surround immersion and control to reflect contemporary cinema technology.
Because the original infrastructure had been carefully future-proofed, we were able to complete the entire upgrade in just three days — without opening walls or compromising finishes.
Designed for Longevity
When the cinema was first constructed, cabling routes, speaker geometry and rack space were designed with long-term flexibility in mind. This foresight allowed new-generation projection, processing and immersive audio formats to be integrated seamlessly ten years later.
The project demonstrates the value of planning beyond immediate technology cycles — ensuring a cinema room can evolve without requiring structural rework.
Engineered for Modern Immersion
The upgraded system now delivers Dolby 7.2.2 surround sound with precise overhead effects and improved dynamic headroom.
The front soundstage is concealed behind an acoustically transparent projection screen, allowing dialogue to originate directly from the image. Dual subwoofers, also hidden within the front wall architecture, provide controlled low-frequency extension without visual intrusion.
As with the original installation, the room was acoustically modelled to achieve balanced reverberation times. Full carpeting and heavy ripple-fold drapery contribute to controlled reflections and a composed listening environment — particularly important in period properties where wall construction can vary.
The result is a cinema that feels substantially more immersive and dynamic, while visually unchanged.
Character-Led Design
The room is colour drenched in deep matt khaki-brown tones across walls and ceiling, creating a cocooned, low-reflection environment ideal for projection.
Sand coloured carpet and a cream U-shaped leather sofa soften the palette, maintaining comfort for long viewing sessions.
A distinctive feature of this cinema is the custom-printed on-wall surround speaker grilles, finished with artwork selected by the client — blending acoustic performance with personal expression.
Integrated Control & Atmosphere
All lighting and playback functions are managed via a touchscreen control interface.
Ceiling and wall downlights are scene-programmed to transition the space from social to cinematic mode, while motorised curtains close when playback begins — preserving contrast and enhancing immersion.
The interface ensures that despite the system’s sophistication, operation remains intuitive for everyday family use.
A Future-Ready Cinema
Ten years after the original installation, this Finchley cinema has been successfully updated to modern performance standards without invasive works.
The project reflects a long-term partnership approach — where thoughtful design at the outset allows technology to evolve while the room itself remains timeless.
For homeowners with older cinema rooms, it demonstrates that upgrading to today’s immersive formats can often be achieved more efficiently than expected when infrastructure has been correctly planned.
