Family Cinema Room for a Custom Home  – Barnet, North London

Dedicated Home Cinema Installation in North London

This dedicated home cinema was designed and integrated during the construction of this custom-built family home property in Barnet, North London. Planned from structural stage and integrated during construction, the room was engineered to deliver true cinematic immersion while remaining intuitive and inviting for everyday family use.

The brief was to create a serious cinema environment — not simply a media room — that would become the preferred space for teenage children, family film nights and entertaining guests.

By engaging during the blockwork stage, we were able to design the room properly from the ground up, rather than retrofitting technology into a finished space.

Designed During Construction, Not Added Later

Because the cinema was incorporated into the build programme, key structural elements were integrated from first fix onwards:

  • Purpose-designed seating riser for correct sightlines

  • Full baffle wall construction to anchor dialogue precisely to the screen

  • Concealed cabling and infrastructure

  • Optimised speaker geometry based on Dolby positioning principles

This early-stage coordination with the builder ensured performance was not compromised by layout restrictions — something that often limits retrofit projects.

Engineered for Immersion

The room was acoustically modelled in software to achieve controlled reverberation times and balanced frequency response.

To achieve this, we specified:

  • Acoustic wooden slat wall panelling

  • Heavy drapery for high-frequency absorption

  • Full carpeted flooring to reduce reflections

  • A fully integrated acoustically transparent projection screen

Positioning the front loudspeakers behind the screen allows dialogue to originate directly from the image — replicating commercial cinema geometry and enhancing realism.

The result is enveloping surround sound with clear, anchored dialogue and controlled, impactful bass — even at higher listening levels.

Light Control & Atmosphere

Visual performance in a cinema is as much about light management as projection quality.

The anthracite wall panelling, matt black ceiling and dark grey curtains minimise stray reflections and preserve contrast. Beige carpet and cream leather recliners soften the palette to maintain warmth and comfort.

Lighting includes:

  • Colour-changing linear LED detailing

  • Discreet ceiling downlights

  • Pre-programmed cinema scenes

All lighting and playback functions are controlled via a single intuitive cinema remote, integrated with the home’s lighting control system, allowing the room to transition from bright social space to full cinematic mode instantly.

A Room That Defines the Home

Since completion, the cinema has become the most used and most admired room in the property.

The client reports it is now the preferred space for family evenings and teenage gatherings — and consistently the room that guests ask to see first.

This project demonstrates how incorporating a dedicated cinema into a new build — rather than adding one later — results in superior performance, cleaner design and a truly integrated architectural finish.
