Dedicated Basement Cinema Room in Wilmington, Kent

This dedicated cinema room forms part of the basement level of a custom-built family home in Wilmington, Kent. Designed as a true private cinema rather than a casual media space, the room was planned from the earliest stages of the house build to ensure that acoustics, sightlines and lighting could be integrated properly from the outset.

Our involvement began more than two years before the property was completed, advising the client even before groundworks had begun. This early collaboration allowed the cinema to be incorporated into the structural layout of the home rather than adapted after construction.

The result is a purpose-built environment where every aspect of the room — from sound isolation to seating layout — supports an immersive viewing experience.

Designed from the Structure Up

Because the cinema was incorporated during the construction phase, critical architectural and acoustic elements could be integrated from blockwork stage onwards.

Extensive acoustic insulation was installed within the room’s structure to prevent sound transfer to the rest of the house, allowing films to be enjoyed at full cinematic levels without disturbing other living areas.

The cinema was also modelled in acoustic software to achieve controlled reverberation times, ensuring dialogue clarity and balanced surround performance throughout the seating area.

Absorptive treatments were installed across three walls and concealed behind stretched fabric panelling, creating a clean architectural finish while maintaining precise acoustic control.

Engineered for Immersion

The front soundstage sits behind an acoustically transparent projection screen, allowing dialogue and on-screen action to originate from the correct position within the image.

Surround and overhead speakers are carefully positioned to deliver enveloping spatial effects while remaining visually discreet. In-wall speakers are concealed behind the stretched fabric wall system, while ceiling speakers with black grilles disappear into the dark green coffered ceiling above.

A custom-built projector housing forms a sculptural element within the room. The surrounding stretched fabric panelling follows the geometry of the enclosure, creating subtle angles that add depth and visual interest to the space.

Deep pile carpeting further contributes to acoustic absorption while enhancing comfort and warmth within the cinema.

Atmosphere and Lighting

Lighting plays a central role in shaping the mood of the room.

The ceiling features integrated linear LED lighting within the coffered detail, alongside discreet downlights and a seamless fibre-optic star ceiling. When combined, these layers create a dramatic yet relaxed environment.

One particularly effective scene uses low-level linear lighting together with the star ceiling to evoke the soft ambience of dusk — an atmospheric transition before the film begins.

All cinema functions are controlled through a single handheld interface, which manages playback and lighting scenes in coordination with the home’s lighting system.

A Favourite Room in the House

Since completion, the cinema has become one of the most loved spaces in the home. The client’s children regularly use the room for films and gaming, while the family often hosts friends and relatives for movie nights.

The acoustic isolation of the basement allows films to be enjoyed at full cinematic levels without concern for the rest of the house — something the family particularly values.

Reflecting on the build process, the client commented that the cinema was the one room we did not need to worry about,” noting the confidence they had in leaving our team to deliver the space from early design through to completion.

Today the room provides a place where television and film can be experienced exactly as intended — immersive, comfortable and free from distraction.
